Firmware Updates

The Particle’s firmware can be updated via drag and drop using any Mac or PC.
No driver or special software is required.

You will need a USB Mini B cable to connect the Particle to your computer.

Downloading new firmware:
1. Go to www.redpandalab.com/downloads#particle
2. Download the firmware file (.zip) to your computer.
3. Double-click the downloaded zip file to expand.

Caution
* Do not rename the extracted file.
* Never turn off the pedal’s power while an update is in progress.
Otherwise the system software or the pedal itself may be destroyed.
* Eject the pedal before disconnecting the USB cable or removing power.

Update procedure:
 1. Hold down the left footswitch and connect power.
 2. The right LED will blink blue.
 3. Continue holding the footswitch for 2 seconds.
 4. The LED will turn solid blue. The pedal is now in USB Mass Storage mode.
 5. Connect the pedal to the computer using a mini USB cable.
 6. Open the PARTICLE (Mac OS) or "USB Drive" (Windows) drive on your computer.
 7. Drag the .bin file to the PARTICLE drive. The firmware update will
take several seconds. The preset LEDs will blink in sequence to show progress.
 8. After the firmware update is complete, the right LED will turn solid green.
If an error occurred, the red LED will blink instead.
 9. Eject the PARTICLE drive from your computer:
Windows: right-click on the USB Drive icon in My Computer and select “Eject”
Mac OS X: click eject button next to PARTICLE or drag PARTICLE icon to the trash.
11. Disconnect the USB cable.
12. Turn the pedal’s power off.

To check which version of firmware your pedal is running:
 1. Hold down the left footswitch and connect power.
 2. The LED will blink blue.
 3. Continue holding the footswitch for 2 seconds.
 4. The LED will turn solid blue. The pedal is now in USB Mass Storage mode.
 5. Connect the pedal to the computer using a mini USB cable.
 6. Open the PARTICLE drive on your computer.
 7. Open the VERSION.TXT file in a text editor.

To verify firmware download using MD5 checksum (optional):
You can verify the integrity of the firmware file from the
Terminal or command line. This is usually not necessary.
Mac: md5 <file>
Windows: certutil -hashfile <file> MD5
Compare the the returned string to the string in the firmware update .md5 file.

Troubleshooting:

If your computer does not mount the pedal as a USB drive, or disconnects
after a short time, verify that the Particle is connected to a power supply
outlet rated for 250 mA or higher.

If the firmware update pauses with one of the red LEDs on, eject the PARTICLE
drive from your computer to complete the update procedure. If that does not
work, try the update procedure again.

If the right LED blinks red, turn the Particle off, then on, and try again.
Confirm that you are copying the .bin file and no other files.

If preset LED 2 turns on after ejecting the Particle, that is normal.
